About Staten Island

Staten Island is the southernmost and least populous of New York City's five boroughs and is coextensive with Richmond County. Lying in New York Harbor south of Manhattan and west of Brooklyn, it is joined to the rest of the city by the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and by the Staten Island Ferry, which has carried passengers to Lower Manhattan free of charge since 1997, and to New Jersey by three bridges. More suburban in character than the other boroughs, it includes the Staten Island Greenbelt, Historic Richmond Town, Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Freshkills Park, being built on the site of the former landfill.
