Sci-Fi Screenwriting Workshop with Stephen Winter

Stephen Winter is a filmmaker, producer, and writer. His debut feature, Chocolate Babies (1996), won Best Feature awards at the New York and Chicago Gay and Lesbian Film Festivals, an SXSW Honorable Mention for Narrative Feature, and selection at the Berlin International Film Festival; it was restored in 2021 by UCLA Film & Television Archive and Outfest. His second feature, Jason and Shirley (2015), co-written by and starring Sarah Schulman and Jack Waters, premiered at BAMcinemaFest and screened for two weeks at MoMA; The New Yorker's Richard Brody called it "uncanny" and "electrifying." A revised edition, Jason and Shirley Revisited, premiered at NewFest in 2025 ahead of a 2026 roadshow. Winter produced Jonathan Caouette's landmark "narci-cinema" documentary Tarnation (2004), which screened at Sundance and Cannes. He directed The Space Within (2023–26), starring and co-produced by Jessica Chastain for Audible. He has worked with Lee Daniels, Gus Van Sant, and John Cameron Mitchell. Playwright Jeremy O. Harris called him "the father of modern Black Queer cinema."

Johnson Endeavor Foundation Artist-in-Residence program was established in 1986 as a challenge grant in support of the arts at Colgate.
