About this event

The Colgate University Orchestra, with Marietta Cheng as conductor, will perform the brilliant orchestral masterpiece Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.

The composer was inspired by the 1001 Arabian Nights. Clever Scheherazade saves her life by telling the Sultan engrossing stories, but postponing the end of the story until the next day. By the end, the Sultan has softened and the two have fallen in love. Our concertmaster Edgar Tumajyan has dazzling violin solos to depict the beautiful voice of Scheherazade while the brass represent the cruel Sultan. Another highlight of the concert will be the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22, Kiron Atom Tellian, Piano. He won the Young Concert International Auditions and was a student at Julliard studying with Emanuel Ax. “Tellian must be considered, after the two Milanese hearings, one of the greatest and most original living pianists — in his touch, in the beauty of his sound, and in his mind as composer-interpreter.” Operaclick.

The concert will begin with the spirited Jubilee by George Whitehead Chadwick. In 1895, Chadwick was a leading American composer. The concert is free, and the public is warmly invited.
