Broward County is located in the southeastern part of Florida, within the Miami metropolitan area. It’s the second-most populous county in Florida and the 17th-most populous in the United States, with a population of 1,944,375 as of the 2020 census. The county seat and most populous city is Fort Lauderdale. The county was formed from portions of Dade and Palm Beach Counties in 1915 and was named after former Florida governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward. In less than a century, a land once deemed “unfit for human habitation” has transformed into the permanent home of nearly two million people and the winter residence of tens of thousands more. Broward County is part of the vibrant Miami metropolitan area, which was home to more than 6 million people at the 2020 census.
